If you’re all about keeping your four-legged pal happy and entertained, then frozen Kong recipes are a game changer! Frozen Kongs are not only a great way to treat your dog, they provide mental stimulation and can help relax them too.

But it can be hard to know where to start as there are so many different flavor combinations to try – from the classic peanut butter fillings to new, exciting flavors that your dog will go bananas for.

So here I share tail-wagging frozen Kong recipes, frozen Kong ideas for puppies and plenty of suggested Kong fillers to make frozen treats your pup will love. And don’t worry if you’re not a master chef – these recipes are quick and easy to prepare.

What You Need To Make Frozen Kong Recipes

To get started making these frozen kong recipes, you will need:

• Kong – they come in several sizes, so make sure you buy based on your dog’s age and size.
• Mixing bowl
• Blender – optional for some recipes
• Kong stand – get creative with how you stand them in the freezer – a mini muffin tray works, as do mugs or egg cartons.

How To Stuff A Frozen Kong

There are no fixed rules for how to stuff a Kong for the freezer. But you basically have two options:

1. Mix the ingredients together first and spoon the mixture in to the Kong.
2. Layer the ingredients in the Kong.

Mixing is pretty self explanatory, but if you want to know how to layer a Kong, we explain this method below.

How To Layer Kong Ingredients

If you have a fussy eater, layering is a good way to entice them to start licking the frozen Kong.

Remember you are filling it in the reverse order they will eat it, so put their favorite flavors in at the end. A good way to fill is:

1. Plug – something to block the hole at the bottom – like peanut butter, cream cheese or a soaked kibble piece.
2. Base treat – this is the last ingredient they will eat, so make it something they love to keep them going till the end. Fruit pieces are a good option.
3. Filler – This makes up the “glue” of your Kong treat – examples include yogurt, peanut butter, pumpkin or rice.
4. Top treats – This is what your pup will first encounter – so vegetable or fruit they like are a good option.
5. Seal – Top the Kong with a another smear of Peanut butter, cream cheese or broth to top it off.
6. Treat – sometimes a carrot stick, milk treat or piece of jerky sticking out of the Kong is a good way to get them started – particularly useful for puppies learning how to eat a frozen Kong.

Considerations When Choosing Frozen Kong Fillings

You can fill a kong with whatever you want, but a good rule of thumb is to include:

• Base ingredient
• Treat
• Healthy food

Base ingredients are things like yogurt, pumpkin puree, applesauce, cottage cheese or banana. They act like glue to hold all the ingredients together.

Treats should be used more sparingly – foods like peanut butter, jerky pieces, ground meat, sardines or cream cheese.

Healthy foods are just that – fresh vegetables and fruits your pup enjoys eating.

Naturally you shouldn’t use any foods your dog has an allergy or intolerance to in your frozen Kong fillers.

Easy Frozen Kong Recipes To Try

Here are just a few frozen kong recipes for dogs you can make at home.

I haven’t listed quantities as it will depend on the size of your Kong as well as how many Kongs you fill in one go.

So adjust the quantities as necessary and if you have any left over simply spoon the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze for easy frozen dog treats.

The recipes are super simple to prepare, and better still, many of the recipes are gluten free.

Frozen Kong Ideas For Puppies

Puppies don’t always know how to eat treats served in a frozen Kong.

So start by lining the Kong with a tasty treat (like peanut butter, applesauce or pumpkin) and letting them lick the Kong.

Then once they get the hang of it, start adding more ingredients into the Kong.

Be careful not to overfill it when getting started as it can be difficult for them to get through. A loosely packed Kong is better for puppies.

Sometimes positioning a piece of jerky, a milk treat or even a carrot stick into the top of the Kong can encourage them to get started.

To stop any leakage, cover the bottom hole with a small amount peanut butter, cream cheese or kibble. Or place a piece of tape over the opening and remove once frozen.

Put any left over mixture into an ice cube tray to serve as simple frozen dog treats.

Finally, I recommend you serve the frozen Kong treat to your dog in an easy to clean space or outside as they can get messy as they thaw.
