St. Louis Post-Dispatch from St. Louis, Missouri (2024)

ST. LOUIS POST- DISPATCH WEDNESDAY, JUNE 28, 1995 Eads Alert Indiana Town Wants Help To Save Bridge-Builder's Home By Patricia Corrigan Of the Post-Dispatch Staff The Dearborn County Historical Society in Lawrenceburg, is up against a deadline, desperate to save the one building in the town that might be named a National Historic Landmark. What do we care? Well, the building is the birthplace of James Buchanan Eads, designer and builder of our own Eads Bridge. The house has been donated to the Dearborn County Historical Society, but the society must move the building by Aug. 1 or it will be razed to make way for an office building.

"What we need is help in discovering the descendants of James B. Eads, who may be interested in helping to save a part of their family history," said Lynn Slayback, chairman of the Eads House Fund. He said he also needed donations to pay to move the house. The group hopes to raise $12,500. As of Tuesday, it had $5,000.

The house was built in 1815 and combines the federal and Italianate styles. Lawrenceburg, a town of 4,500, is in the southeastern corner of Indiana, just across the border from Cincinnati. Eads, a self-taught engineer and builder of bridges, is the only Hoosier (and the only engineer) in the Hall of Fame of Famous American Persons, in New York. Eads came to St. Louis with his family in 1833, at the age of 13.

As a young man, he started a salvage operation in the Mississippi River. He built the first diving bell, and President Abraham Lincoln commissioned him to build 14 armored gunboats for use in the Civil War. As an adult, Eads lived at 1613 South Compton Avenue. The house is no longer standing. He is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery.

In 1867, Eads began construction on the first bridge across the Mississippi below its confluence, the bridge that bears his name. The world's first arched steel truss bridge, it opened on July 4, 1874, and today is on the Register of Historic Places. State Is Offering Guide For Key Medigap Choice By Theresa Tighe Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Overwhelmed at the thought of selecting the best insurance to pay the bills Medicare won't? Who wouldn't be? In Missouri, 73 companies sell 10 types of Medigap policies. Prices range from about $300 a year to more than $3,000. And, making a prompt decision critical, the only time insurers must sell someone such a policy is during the six months after a person turns 65; after that, a company can legally refuse to insure the applicant.

The Missouri Department of Insurance wants to help you. The department is offering residents a free rate guide. The booklet Medicare Supplement Insurance Cost Comparison Guide contains shopping tips, consumer-friendly definitions of insurance terms and rates. "Older Missourians can save substantially if they shop aggressively and wisely when they first buy a policy," said Jay Angoff, director of the Missouri Department of Insurance. Most people qualify for Medicare at 65.

Medicare is the federal government's insurance plan for the elderly or disabled. Since 1991, by congressional mandate, all companies offer one or more of 10 standard levels of Medigap coverage. But prices and methods of pricing vary. After the first purchase of Medigap insurance, people benefit from changing insurers or policies only if they want to substantially change benefits, said officials with the Missouri Department of Insurance. Prices quoted in the booklet were effective March 1 and based on statewide averages for a female smoker.

Some companies charge different rates for men, nonsmokers and residents of different regions. People who want a free copy of the booklet can call: Statewide: 1-800-726-7390. OBITUARIES William Slattery, 68; Professor At SIUE, Wrote Book, Articles William C. Slayback said he also had gotten in touch with residents of Louisiana for help in saving Eads' birthplace, because Eads built the jetties along the Mississippi delta that helped maintain New Orleans as an ocean port during the 1870s.
