Prepare to pay more for fastnachts; here’s where to buy them for Shrove Tuesday (2024)

Prepare to pay more this year for fastnachts.

Like nearly everything these days, prices for the Shrove Tuesday treats have increased by a few dollars. Some places are selling them for more than $13 a dozen.

Still, the doughnuts with the funny name and Pennsylvania Dutch roots are an annual tradition, so it’s hard to resist.

Every year on the Tuesday before the Lenten season, bakeries, grocery stores and churches sell the deep-fried doughnuts in a variety of flavors, from plain to cinnamon sugar. This year, it falls on Feb. 21.

In other parts of the country, the day is honored as Fat Tuesday, Mardis Gras or Pancake Day.

The tradition of eating fastnachts started with the Pennsylvania Dutch, who were looking for recipes to use up fat, such as lard, in the house before Lent. Fastnacht is a German word meaning “night before the fast.”

To ensure you don’t miss out on the doughnut tradition, here’s a list of places in and around the Harrisburg region selling them in the coming days:
